"Bal d'Afrique is one of my first compositions. While developing it, I was obsessed with the idea of translating memories into scents. At the same time, I felt confident enough to incorporate an imaginary element. My father lived and traveled in Africa for about 10–15 years. I read his diaries; the way he traveled on cargo ships, how he met all kinds of people… For me, that was the idea of arriving in Africa myself through another person’s words. With a focus on beauty and fantasy, Bal d’Afrique is Ben Gorham’s “love letter” to Africa. In the desire to celebrate Africa’s reach and influence over time, particularly the way its countless cultures, dance, art, and music have shaped the world, the idea of an imaginary event was born. Bal d’Afrique evokes this emotionality with notes of neroli, marigold, and Moroccan cedarwood.
