In the summer, there’s no place I love more than the New England coast—Marblehead, Maine; Phillips Beach in Swampscott; or Nantucket, to name just a few. It’s hot, but in the late afternoon, the sea breeze brings cool, salty air. A cloudless sky stretches over the Atlantic, while seagulls circle high above the sailboats. At the edge of the beaches, dense bushes of Rosa rugosa, the wild potato rose, grow. Their scent is fresh, musky, and slightly fruity. Toward the end of summer, their rose hips glow a vibrant tomato red among the glossy, deep-green leaves. Honeysuckle, black raspberries, and other vines intertwine with the dune grass.
I also associate an incredible amount of music with this time of year: summer songs, soul, the velvety voice of Cooke, Otis Redding, doo-wop, and, of course, Frank Sinatra’s “Summer Wind.” As a child, I attended a summer camp on an island. Every morning we took a double-decker ferry there and sang the whole way. On the way back, “Summer Wind” played, and everyone sang along.
That’s why this fragrance is so much more than just a rose. It blends the ocean with delicate petals, green stems, waxy leaves, and the fresh, idyllic lightness of a summer by the sea. An effortless fragrance for every day.
