Created in 1853 by Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, Eau de Cologne Impériale was Guerlain's first eau de cologne. Composed especially for Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, the perfume earned Guerlain the title of "Imperial Court Perfumer." The Empress enjoyed exclusive use of this fragrance for several years before agreeing to its commercialization.

The label bears the symbol of the empire with the coat of arms chosen by Napoleon: eagle, imperial crown, and scepter.

The bottle is adorned with the symbolic 69 bees of the empire and the symbol/coat of arms of the Guerlain family, "Eaux."
