FROM THE PERFUMER
I am fascinated by hypothetical scents. Not everything has a strong or immediately perceptible smell, yet objects can evoke the idea of a scent. Light bulbs glow; electricity flows through their metal filaments, and the resulting heat warms the dust on their surface. Amplifier tubes also have a scent all their own.
When my 1969 Fender Deluxe gets really hot, a warm, dusty, metallic-greasy scent emerges from the back—like the smell backstage at a sweltering concert club. So what if a tube amplifier were housed in an old sandalwood radio? The heat would open the pores of the wood and release its soft, elegant scent: clouds of musky cedar, peach, coconut, lactones, and milk.
To me, genuine sandalwood essence is perfection. I often wear it undiluted. Its scent reminds me of India, spiritual figures, purity, and concentration. Unfortunately, sandalwood has been overharvested, which is why perfumers today rarely use genuine Mysore sandalwood oil.
Radio Bombay is a deconstruction of classic Mysore sandalwood, reassembled from all these impressions. I imagine an old radio in a small, hot shop in Bandra. The heat brings out the wood’s various facets, while ragas and the songs of Geeta Dutt drift from the small speaker out into the bustling city.
